Current valuations of watershed ecosystem services are often constrained by theoretical fragmentation, methodological rigidity, and static outcomes. To address these limitations, this paper reconstructs an integrated assessment framework designed to overcome the failure of conventional approaches to capture ecosystem integrity, dynamic evolution, and socio-cultural values. Drawing upon the philosophy of value, ecosystem service theory, and Social-Ecological System (SES) theory, we propose a dynamic assessment system structured around the “Structure-Process-Function-Service-Wellbeing” cascade. This system is conceptualized as a “three-dimensional, four-tiered” framework that integrates eco-physical, functional-service, and socio-economic dimensions, while linking four hierarchical tiers: foundational elements, process accounting, value assessment, and decision-making application. This framework introduces three primary theoretical advances: 1) establishing a dynamic spatio-temporal assessment model that couples the flow of values with ecosystem health responses; 2) moving beyond singular monetary metrics by developing a pluralistic value matrix that integrates ecological, social, and cultural dimensions; and 3) visualizing the impact of human activities and revealing the driving role of SES feedback mechanisms on value evolution. The framework provides a systematic theoretical tool for integrated watershed governance and decision-making on ecological compensation. However, its implementation requires overcoming critical bottlenecks, including multi-source data fusion, cross-scale model coupling, and effective policy translation, to bridge the gap from theoretical construction to practical application in ecosystem service valuation. |
